Comfort

Why is my upstairs hotter than downstairs?

Why two story Triangle homes run hot upstairs in summer, and the fixes that actually work.

By the Exodus Heating & Air service team

Short answer

Heat rises, upstairs rooms sit under a hot attic, and many homes have too little supply or return air upstairs. Leaky or undersized ductwork in the attic makes it worse. Fixes include sealing and balancing ducts, adding return air, zoning, or a mini split for a bonus room.

Why it happens

  • Attics in North Carolina summers get extremely hot, and that heat radiates into the rooms below.
  • Ducts that run through the attic lose cooling before the air reaches the room.
  • Many upstairs floors have a single small return, so air cannot circulate.
  • One thermostat downstairs means the system shuts off before upstairs is comfortable.

What helps

  1. Run the fan on On instead of Auto during hot afternoons to mix air.
  2. Keep upstairs vents fully open and blinds closed on sunny sides.
  3. Have airflow and static pressure measured to find the real restriction.
  4. Seal duct leaks, add or enlarge returns, or balance dampers.
  5. For bonus rooms, consider a mini split.
