What causes excess humidity in a house?

Why North Carolina homes feel clammy, what humidity level to aim for, and how to fix it.

Short answer

High indoor humidity comes from humid outdoor air leaking in, crawl space moisture, an oversized or misadjusted AC that does not run long enough to dry the air, and daily activities like cooking and showers. Aim for roughly 40 to 50 percent indoors.

Common causes in Triangle homes

  • Long, humid summers and shoulder seasons when the AC barely runs
  • Crawl spaces with open vents or poor vapor barriers
  • Leaky return ducts pulling in attic or crawl space air
  • An oversized AC that cools quickly and shuts off before removing moisture
  • Blower speed set too high for dehumidification

How to fix it

  1. Measure: an inexpensive hygrometer tells you where you stand.
  2. Have your AC checked for sizing and airflow settings.
  3. Seal return duct leaks.
  4. Add a whole home dehumidifier if the house stays above 55 to 60 percent.
