Short answer

When a furnace or heating system stops working, the usual causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, a pressure switch or inducer problem, a clogged filter, a thermostat issue, or failed heat strips in an electric air handler. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility first.

Signs your heating needs repair

  • The blower runs but the air is cool
  • The furnace starts, then shuts off within a minute
  • Clicking, rumbling, or squealing at startup
  • Rooms never reach the thermostat setting
  • Utility bills climb without a change in use

How we diagnose heating problems

We check ignition, flame sensing, safety switches, gas pressure where applicable, airflow, and the control board, and we test heat strip amperage on electric systems. Safety first, always: we check for issues like a cracked heat exchanger and carbon monoxide risks and explain anything we find.

Heat pump instead of a furnace?

Many Triangle homes heat with a heat pump. If yours does, see heat pump repair, which covers defrost, reversing valve, and auxiliary heat issues.

How much does a heating diagnostic cost?

Our standard residential diagnostic is $99 during regular business hours, including an explanation of findings and upfront pricing before any approved repair. Repairs are quoted separately. Comfort Members pay $64.99.

Why does my furnace turn on then shut off?

Short cycling on a gas furnace is often a dirty flame sensor or an airflow problem from a clogged filter. It can also be a safety switch doing its job. We find out which.

Do you repair electric furnaces and air handlers?

Yes. We service gas furnaces, electric air handlers with heat strips, and heat pump systems.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the home, avoid using switches, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Once the utility clears it, call us to diagnose the equipment.
