Decisions

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

How Exodus decides between repairing and replacing a heat pump, and the questions to ask any contractor.

By the Exodus Heating & Air service team

Short answer

Repair when the fix is safe, reasonable compared with the value of the system, and likely to give you dependable years. Consider replacement when a major component like the compressor or coil fails on an older system, when repairs are becoming frequent, or when comfort problems cannot be solved with a repair.

Questions we ask

  1. What exactly failed, and is the diagnosis confirmed by measurement?
  2. What does the repair cost compared with replacement?
  3. How old is the system, and what condition are the coil and compressor in?
  4. Has the system had repeated major repairs?
  5. Is the home comfortable when the system works?

Red flags from any contractor

  • A replacement quote with no diagnosis
  • Pressure to decide today
  • No explanation of what failed

Our approach

If a repair is safe and reasonable, we recommend it. When replacement is the better value, we explain why and give you clear options. See replacement or get a second opinion.
