Is a heat pump a good option in North Carolina?

Why heat pumps are the most common system in the Triangle, and when pairing with a gas furnace still makes sense.

By the Exodus Heating & Air service team

Short answer

For most homes in the Raleigh and Durham area, yes. Winters are mild enough that a heat pump provides efficient heating most of the season, and it cools in summer too. In colder snaps, auxiliary heat or a gas furnace pairing covers the gap.

Why heat pumps fit the Triangle

  • Mild winters with relatively few very cold days
  • One system handles heating and cooling
  • Modern variable speed models improve comfort and humidity control

When a dual fuel setup makes sense

If you already have natural gas and a good furnace, pairing a heat pump with the furnace lets the system use gas on the coldest days.
